Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day that was celebrated on November 11. In honor of the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. A year after the end of World War I. President Woodrow Wilson signed the Armistice that ended World War I.
A day celebrated every anniversary. An armistice is an agreement made by opposing sides in a war to stop fighting for a certain time also known as a truce. In 1945, World War II the idea to expand Armistice day to celebrate all veterans. Rather than the ones who died in World War I was proposed by veteran Raymond Weeks. Raymond Weeks led a delegation to General Dwight Eisenhower. A delegation is a body of delegates or representatives. A delegate is to send or authorize (someone) to do something as a representative. Raymond Weeks then organized the first Veterans Day celebration in Alabama 1945. And every year since until he died in 1985. In 1982 President Reagan honored Raymond Weeks with the Presidential Citizenship Medal. Elizabeth Dole named him the ‘Father of Veterans Day’. Eight and a half years after Raymond Week held the first Veterans Day. Ed Rees presented a bill to establish the holiday to Congress. President Eisenhower signed the bill into law. On May 26 1954 changing the holiday Armistice day to Veterans Day to show respect to all veterans in all wars. In the past, present, and or future wars on this day a veteran will always be honored though out the ages in our hearts. Although similar in theme Veteran Day and Memorial Day are commonly confused. Memorial Day is a time to remember those who gave their lives for our country. While Veterans Day is to honor all those who have served the country in war or peace dead or alive.
